The 2026 Unity 50-cent coin commemorates two defining milestones in Australia’s history: the 60th anniversary of the Wave Hill Walk-Off and the 50th anniversary of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Act 1976.

In August 1966, approximately 200 Gurindji, Mudburra and Warlpiri people, led by Vincent Lingiari, walked away from Wave Hill cattle station in protest against unfair wages and poor living conditions. Their courageous action developed into a landmark campaign for the recognition of Aboriginal land rights.

The reverse design depicts the Gurindji people beginning the historic walk-off, with the landscape transforming into the hand of Vincent Lingiari during the symbolic return of Gurindji land by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975. The word UNITY is incorporated into the overlapping shadows, representing the strength created by standing together in pursuit of justice.
