2022 50c Australian Signals Directorate 75th Anniversary “Reveal & Protect” Carded UNC Coin

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint in 2022, this distinctive 50 cent coin commemorates the 75th Anniversary of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) and its role in Australian signals intelligence and cyber security.

The design is particularly unusual among Australian commemorative coins, incorporating multiple layers of cryptographic code developed in collaboration with ASD experts. Collectors were challenged to decipher the coded elements of the design, ultimately revealing hidden messages connected with the organisation’s history and its enduring motto, “Reveal their secrets – Protect our own.”

The Australian Signals Directorate traces its origins to 1947, when the Defence Signals Bureau was established following the Second World War. The coin marks 75 years of Australian signals intelligence through a design combining cryptography, binary-inspired imagery and modern communications themes.

Presented in its original Royal Australian Mint illustrated card, the packaging continues the intelligence theme with historical imagery relating to Australian signals operations.

The Royal Australian Mint records a final mintage of 49,750 coins, against a maximum authorised mintage of 50,000.
