2010 Inspirational Australians – Fred Hollows $1 Uncirculated Coin in Card

The third release in the Royal Australian Mint’s Inspirational Australians series celebrates the life and extraordinary humanitarian work of Professor Fred Hollows.

Fred Hollows was an internationally respected ophthalmologist, surgeon and advocate for social justice who dedicated his life to improving access to affordable eye care. His pioneering work restored sight to thousands of people and continues today through The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Inspired by a photograph taken by George Fetting, the coin’s reverse depicts Fred Hollows holding an intraocular lens—symbolising his determination to make sight-restoring surgery accessible to people throughout Australia and the developing world.
